GTA 6 vs real Florida: every Leonida region and its real-world inspiration

Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the fictional U.S. state of Leonida — the series’ take on Florida — and launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has officially named six regions, each with its own tagline, but it has never attached a real-world place name to any of them. So this page does something different from a fact sheet: it lays each region against the real Florida (and, in one case, Georgia) and rates how confident the match actually is. You can follow along on our interactive map, which plots the confirmed regions on an original schematic — never extracted game data.

One caveat, stated up front. That “Leonida is Florida” is settled — it is near-universal press consensus and, per Wikipedia, a state “based on Florida.” But every specific 1:1 analog below (Miami, the Keys, the Everglades, the Panhandle, sugar country, a northern park) is editorial interpretation, not a Rockstar statement. Rockstar uses only fictional names. Our sourcing on the official region names and taglines is tier-2 in our standard — rockstargames.com/VI blocks automated fetchers, so its copy is index-corroborated across reputable outlets rather than machine-archived. Dates and platforms are cited to Take-Two’s investor release, which verifies live.

How we rate confidence

Because Rockstar names no real places, we grade each analog on a simple ladder:

Official statement — Rockstar explicitly named the real place. This never happens in GTA VI; every analog below sits below this rung.
Very high — franchise-established and/or a direct name/visual echo, and stated as inspiration by mainstream press.
Medium-high — a strong thematic or naming echo, but the specific pin is press or community interpretation.
Low / contested — fans and outlets disagree; do not treat as consensus.

The regions, one by one

Vice City ↔ Miami — very high

The primary city returns as Vice City, officially “the sun and fun capital of America.” The Miami read is the strongest analog in the game for the plain reason that it is franchise canon: Vice City has stood in for Miami since 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and coverage such as Kotaku’s setting breakdown treats the identification as a given. Widely-noted district echoes — Ocean Beach as South Beach’s Art Deco strip, Little Cuba as Little Havana — are naming interpretation, not official labels, but the overall Miami inspiration is about as safe as an unconfirmed analog gets.

Rockstar’s word: “Vice City.” Our read: Miami. Confidence: very high (franchise-established + clear visual/naming match).

Leonida Keys ↔ the Florida Keys — very high

The Leonida Keys are a tropical archipelago where “the dress code is casual, the bars are loaded.” The match is nearly on the nose: the name literally carries “Keys,” the geography is a chain of islands, and CBS12 and Wikipedia both describe a version of the Florida Keys. Still short of an official Rockstar statement, but the name-plus-geography echo makes this one of the surest analogs on the map.

Grassrivers ↔ the Everglades — very high

Grassrivers is officially “Welcome to the Wetlands,” the “untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown,” full of gators and mangroves. The name is the tell: the Everglades’ most famous nickname is the “River of Grass,” and both CBS12 and Wikipedia call out the Everglades as the inspiration. Rockstar’s own wetland copy matches the thematic read almost exactly.

Port Gellhorn ↔ the faded Panhandle / “Forgotten Coast” — medium-high

Port Gellhorn is officially “Leonida’s forgotten coast” — cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and strip malls that “won’t bring the tourists back.” That tagline is doing a lot of work: real Florida’s Panhandle stretch around Apalachicola is nicknamed the “Forgotten Coast,” so a faded-Gulf-coast read is well supported. The looser part is the specific pin — fan and outlet coverage often names Panama City in particular, which is interpretation stacked on interpretation rather than anything Rockstar implied.

Rockstar’s word: “Port Gellhorn,” “forgotten coast.” Our read: the faded Panhandle / Gulf coast. Confidence: medium-high for the Panhandle; lower for the exact city (Rockstar tagline echo + community theory).

Ambrosia ↔ Lake Okeechobee sugar country — medium-high

Ambrosia is officially an agricultural and industrial community dominated by the (fictional) Allied Crystal sugar refinery, which “provides the jobs.” The community read maps this onto Florida’s real sugar belt south of Lake Okeechobee — Clewiston / Belle Glade — with the on-map Lake Leonida standing in for Lake Okeechobee and Allied Crystal echoing the real U.S. Sugar refinery at Clewiston. It is a strong thematic match because that is where Florida’s sugar industry actually concentrates, but the pin comes from community analysis (a fan wiki), not press reporting or Rockstar, so we hold it a rung below the top analogs.

Mount Kalaga National Park ↔ ? — low / contested

This is the one to be careful with. Mount Kalaga National Park is officially “Wild, Wild Country” on the state’s northern fringes, described by PC Gamer as a mountainous park of hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals. You may see it pinned to central Florida’s Ocala National Forest — but that analog is weakly supported and we do not endorse it. Ocala is flat pine scrub; Kalaga has canyons and a named mountain, which actively contradict it. The stronger community and press read leans on Georgia — a canyon reminiscent of Providence Canyon State Park — plus the northern-Florida / Suwannee River borderlands, as noted in coverage from GamesRadar and the fan wiki. Even fans disagree, so treat this analog as unsettled.

Rockstar’s word: “Mount Kalaga National Park,” “Wild, Wild Country.” Our read: contested — Georgia (Providence Canyon) plus northern-Florida borderlands is stronger than the Ocala pin, but nothing here is settled. Confidence: low.

What is not confirmed

To keep the honesty front and center:

No real-world place name is official. Rockstar has never said “Miami,” “Everglades,” “Florida Keys,” “Panhandle,” “Clewiston,” “Ocala,” or “Georgia.” Every analog above is our editorial interpretation, graded on the ladder — not a Rockstar statement.
No official map or map-size figure exists. Claims that Leonida is “nearly twice the size of GTA V” are community estimates, not confirmed numbers.
No PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 version has been announced — only PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
There is no Trailer 3 as of this writing. Only Trailer 1 (Dec 4, 2023) and Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025) exist on the official @RockstarGames channel; anything labeled “Trailer 3” is a fan fake, and the tell is that the uploading channel is not @RockstarGames.
