GTA 6 Map Size vs GTA 5: What's Confirmed and What's Only Estimated

Published: 2026-07-18 · map, map-size, estimates

Rockstar Games has never published a single official number for the size of the Grand Theft Auto VI map. Not a square-mile figure, not a square-kilometer figure, not a “bigger than GTA V” multiplier — nothing. What we actually know is confirmed and narrow: GTA VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s take on Florida, centered on Vice City. Our interactive map plots every officially named place on an original schematic basemap, and the map explainer covers the six named regions. This article is about the one thing Rockstar has not given us: a size.

One sourcing note up front, per our editorial standard: the release date and platforms are cited to Take-Two’s investor-relations release, which verifies live (tier 1). Rockstar’s own site and Newswire return errors to automated archivers, so any quote from them is index-corroborated across multiple reputable outlets (tier 2). No number in this article comes from Rockstar — because Rockstar has published none.

What Rockstar has actually said about scale (spoiler: no numbers)

Rockstar’s only official characterization of the world’s scale is marketing language, not measurement. Across its trailer announcements the studio has called GTA VI “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet” — phrasing that runs from the Trailer 1 Newswire (December 2023) through the Trailer 2 press materials and is echoed across outlets covering both reveals (index-corroborated; the Newswire pages themselves block archivers). “Biggest yet” is a superlative. It cannot be converted into square miles, and it does not commit Rockstar to any figure.

Beyond that, the confirmed map facts are all names, not dimensions. Rockstar has officially named six areas of Leonida — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park — which our map explainer walks through in detail. A list of named regions tells you nothing about area: a map can name a dozen districts and still be compact, or name a handful and be enormous.

The only official footage of the world is the two trailers — Trailer 1 (December 4, 2023) and Trailer 2 (May 6, 2025), both on the official @RockstarGames YouTube channel. As of July 18, 2026 there is no Trailer 3 and no further official world reveal. Every community size estimate is therefore derived from those two trailers plus promotional screenshots — not from any Rockstar data table.

⚠️ EVERYTHING BELOW THIS LINE IS AN ESTIMATE

No number past this point is official. Every figure is community- or press-derived, measured from trailers and screenshots. We reproduce them to explain the methodology and its limits — not as fact. Rockstar has confirmed none of them.

Where the community “square miles” numbers come from

When you see a confident “the GTA 6 map is X square miles” headline, it traces back to one of a few amateur measuring methods, all applied to trailer footage:

Each method is a guess stacked on assumptions — assumed vehicle speed, assumed the trailer showed the map’s true extent, assumed nothing is compressed for cinematics. The clearest proof that they are guesses is that they do not agree with one another.

The estimates contradict each other — badly

Community and press figures for GTA VI’s landmass range from roughly 48 square miles at the low end to about 118–132 square miles at the high end, with multiplier claims spanning 1.5x to 2.7x versus GTA V — all estimates, none official. Gfinity Esports lays out the high-end 118–132 sq mi (≈300–340 km²) figure while stressing it is unconfirmed by Rockstar and purely speculative, and GTABoom walks through why fans dispute whether these comparisons are even realistic. A spread that wide — a factor of more than two between the lowest and highest “measurement” — is not a measurement at all. It is the signature of trailer-derived speculation, and Screen Rant’s coverage of GTA 6 map comparisons captures the same fan skepticism about whether these size claims are realistic at all.

The 2.5x claim is a fan project, not a fact

The most-shared figure — that GTA VI is about 2.5x (often “2.4–2.7x”) the size of GTA V — originates from a fan mapping project that measured trailer landmarks and coastline shapes, as reported by GameFragger and echoed in Screen Rant’s coverage of the 2.4–2.7x range. It is a community estimate, full stop. Headlines that dress it up as “officially confirmed” or sourced to an “Amazon listing” contradict their own article bodies, which admit the number is speculative. Treat any “confirmed 2.5x” claim as a rumor: Rockstar has published no multiplier.

The GTA V baseline is also an estimate

Here is the part most comparisons skip: GTA V’s own map size was never officially confirmed either, and even the community’s figures for it don’t agree. Land-only measurements cluster around 29–31 square miles (roughly 76–80 km²), as collected in guides like U7Buy’s; other widely repeated guides put the whole map at about 49 square miles (~127 km²), such as Beebom’s. Both are player calculations, not Rockstar numbers. So “GTA 6 vs GTA 5 square miles” is not fact versus fact — it is estimate versus estimate. Anchoring an unverified GTA VI number to an unverified GTA V number does not make either one official.

What we deliberately won’t repeat

Two claims circulate that we will not present as confirmed. First, the idea that Rockstar has “confirmed 700+ enterable interiors” — this surfaces in aggregator summaries and does not trace to any official Rockstar statement, so it stays out. Second, any estimate built on leaked 2022 footage: leaked material is off-limits on this unofficial fan project, and we do not link the sites that host it.

A slot for the official numbers — empty, for now

If and when Rockstar publishes real figures — at launch, in a Newswire post, or in official specs — they will go here, cited to the official source, and the estimates above will be relabeled as the guesses they were. Until that day, this space is intentionally blank:

Official GTA VI map size: not yet announced.

Want the geography without the fake precision? Our interactive map is an original, schematic, not-to-scale illustration of the named places — editorial estimates on our own artwork, never extracted or leaked game data.

What is and isn’t confirmed

Confirmed (official):

Not confirmed (do not treat as fact):

When Rockstar names a real number — or drops footage that firms one up — this page and the database update the same day, and the estimates get demoted to history.
